Dr. Pedro Noguera Speaks on Race and Educational Equity

American Reading Company Advisory Board member Dr. Pedro Noguera visited the University of North Texas in November for a special event hosted by American Reading Company. Dr. Noguera’s well-received presentation focused on the challenges facing African American and Latino young men.

Dr. Pedro A. Noguera, the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University and urban sociologist, visited UNT on November 29 for a special event hosted by the American Reading Company and the College of Education to address the achievement gap for Latino and African-American youths. The lecture was invited by the college's bilingual/ESL program and the Morningside Children's Partnership.

Noguera's presentation, "What will we do about the boys? Providing academic and social support to African American and Latino males," focused on the challenges facing African American and Latino young men.

Noguera's research and writing take a thoughtful look at the issue of race and educational equity and explore strategies that can change the culture and structure of schools. He has published more than 150 research articles, monographs and research reports on topics such as urban school reform, youth violence, conditions that promote student achievement, the potential impact of school choice and vouchers on urban public schools and race and ethnic relations in American society.
