Learning Rebound in Ocean View School District, CA
In 2019–2020, Ocean View School District set out to strengthen their literacy program by implementing a new ELA curriculum in grades K–5. Just months later, schools across the country faced pandemic-related disruptions that set student achievement back nationwide.
However, despite the challenges the pandemic posed, Ocean View’s commitment to high-quality instruction never wavered. The district moved forward with ARC Core® as its ELA solution, and the results speak for themselves.
Students who began kindergarten in the year of the shutdown started with just 10% reading proficiency in first grade. By the time they reached fourth grade, that number had more than tripled to 35%. Another cohort, who were first graders in 2019–2020, grew from 8% proficient to 37% by fifth grade.
The progress didn’t stop there! On California’s Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), all schools in Ocean View are now outperforming their pre-pandemic scores.
Here’s a snapshot of the data:
Kindergarten cohort (2019–2020): Proficiency increased from 10% in 1st grade to 35% in 4th grade.
Grade 1 cohort (2019–2020): Proficiency rose from 8% in 1st grade to 37% in 5th grade.
SBA Performance: Every Ocean View school has surpassed 2018–2019 levels.
School Spotlights: Mar Vista and Laguna Vista saw 10-point gains in grades 3 and 4, respectively. Tierra Vista improved by 3 points in grade 5.
Ocean View’s results show what’s possible when districts implement ARC Core and the impact of research-based instruction.
