New Research on Closing the Gap for Students Most in Need

New Research on Closing the Gap for Students Most in Need

Exciting new research has just been released, highlighting districts/schools that are rapidly closing literacy gaps and helping students achieve at higher levels. This latest study highlights evidence-based strategies that drive real, measurable improvements.

This groundbreaking study on ARC Core®, an instructional framework grounded in the Science of Reading, reveals the potential for transformative results when schools take a comprehensive approach to literacy. The research examined 13 districts serving historically marginalized students, including those from economically disadvantaged communities and multilingual learners.

The findings were clear: when schools committed to structured, knowledge-building curricula and provided teachers with high-quality professional development, students made substantial gains in reading proficiency.

The study found positive outcomes in grades K–8. In all 13 districts studied, a large portion of students who began the school year reading well below grade level had advanced to on or just below grade level proficiency by the end of the school year. Additionally, the research found that in all 13 districts studied, the percentage of students starting each year reading well below grade level consistently declined year over year.

This newly released study reinforces what educators have long known: when students are given access to rigorous, engaging instruction and teachers receive the support they need, rapid literacy gains are possible. As districts seek solutions to close the reading gap, investing in research-backed approaches like ARC Core can make all the difference.
