School District takes new look at reading

A new reading program is being implemented in the elementary grades at Wallenpaupack to counter a nationwide dilemma in inspiring children to read.

“Nationally, elementary students read a little less than 30 minutes a week,” said Lisa Tait, Supervisor in English Language Arts at Wallenpaupack. She said this at the onset of a presentation about the new program, given to the School Board at the May meeting.

Utilizing the American Reading Company program, a new emphasis on developing a reading culture will be given. Children will be provided with daily experiences with grade level text, applying the lessons and strategies to books the children will choose.
