Student Jumps 5 Grade Levels in a Year and a Half

There are few things more terrifying for a parent than discovering their child cannot read. This was the reality for one parent who learned that her third-grade son was reading at a kindergarten level. Failed spelling tests were a regular occurrence, with words he couldn't read, let alone spell. The school's approach was to send books home for him to read repeatedly until he memorized them, which only masked the bigger problem.

Realizing the situation, the parent had her son transferred to a new school. This school was using ARC Core®, the knowledge-building core ELA curriculum from American Reading Company (ARC).

Through ARC’s formative assessment tool, the IRLA®, his teachers learned exactly where his literacy skills stood and identified specific areas where he needed additional support. This tailored approach outlined by their ARC materials was a game-changer.

At the start of fifth grade, he set a goal to reach proficiency. He not only achieved this goal but also made the honor roll.

This story underscores the importance of early and accurate assessment, dedicated intervention support, and an engaging curriculum. When these elements come together, they can open doors for students, transforming their educational journeys and, ultimately, their lives.
