Science of Reading
The Science of Reading research addresses: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency,Vocabulary, and Comprehension, as well as how Reading Volume and Knowledge Building are foundational to successful reading.
A great overview of the research is here.
What About Older Readers?
The Science of Reading is not just about foundational skills for early readers – there is plenty of research on what it takes to ensure secondary students develop the skills required to be college and career-ready readers.
The highlights:
- Master foundational skills
- Build stamina through high volume reading (a book every week or two!)
- Build knowledge of the world (Science, History, Math etc) and of how texts work (genre schema)
- Build not just vocabulary but word consciousness (of morphology, linguistics)
- Develop an internal Standard of Coherence (believe that text should make sense at that with effort one can make that true of any text)
